I thought I was going to write a nice little blog post about the fun I had in Atlanta this past weekend. But no. I got back in town around 6 on Monday evening, and then I received a text message at 7:30 from my EIC at Kombo, asking me if I remembered a dream I had about him saying, “Fuck it [Kombo], I’m leaving.” My first response was to welcome him back from Japan, because he did just return on Sunday, and then he responded with, “And good-bye.” Long story short, he quit Kombo due to some new changes coming down the line. I always said that I would leave if he went, so I started to type up my letter of resignation. Before I could hit “Send”, one of the owners – my favorite owner at that – announced he was leaving. So then I dropped my bomb. Our News Director was next. Last night, after the remaining owner unveiled his new vision for Kombo, both the Reviews Director and the Assistant quit. Since all of the managing staff was pretty much gone at this point, the owner decided to close the doors on Kombo. It should go down by the end of the month.
I’m very sad to see the site go, especially since I’ve been with them for five years, but it’s just time for me to go. Of course, I can’t leave gaming journalism entirely, which is why I’m so glad that I contacted a friend who happens to be the EIC for GamesAreEvil.com two weeks ago. I was already on my way out, and I wanted to check in with my contacts and see if I would be wanted anywhere else. I accepted the editor position today, so yay me and yay Games Are Evil!
I have other things in the gaming pipeline as well, but I’ll unfold those all in due time.
But let me get back to my original blogging story.
Last weekend I had my annual trip to Atlanta for AWA and spending time with one of my bestest friends. We actually started to plan the Japan trip for next year a little (yay!) and now that I know approximate dates, I’m subscribing to airline ticket price changes. Glee!
We went to AWA and had a great time yet again at Travis Willingham’s panel. I also came home with a ton of new fan art, new figures (sigh), and two new Sora plushes. I’m well aware of my Kingdom Hearts illness, so don’t focus on that.
I had the most fun on Sunday, though. For starters, I actually GOT TO GO TO A MOVIE. And I didn’t have to hire a sitter. We saw Despicable Me, which was awesome and then we took a random road trip to the Carolinas. It started with Rin saying hey, want to go to South Carolina? It’s only 45 minutes away. So off we went, and no, we had nowhere in particular in mind to go. We just went. I haven’t had a random road trip like that since college, and even then, it’s not like it’s that easy to go to a different state on a moment’s notice. OKLAHOMA DOES NOT COUNT. On the way back, we decided to make a scenic loop and drive through North Carolina. It was certainly scenic with trees, mountains, and winding roads that hug the shale cliffs a little too tightly. We stopped and had the most incredible pizza ever at a little nowhere town in North Carolina. If you are driving through Franklin, North Carolina, stop in at The Pizza Place. That is what it is called, and you won’t be sorry.
In other good news, my niece is doing really well. She’s almost flushed out all the excess fluid on her own and she’s slowly moving towards receiving oxygen only instead of using the ventilator to breathe for her. I’m going to Houston this weekend for Lisa’s baby shower, and I have no idea if I’ll get to see Madie or not. I have feeling that if I don’t, I won’t see her until she’s home at Thanksgiving. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s that I’m so tired of traveling and I need a break.
So be sure to check back here soon for the latest news of chaos that seems to be soaking up my September. @_@
