I’ve had a few big changes this year, job-wise, and it’s all happened so fast, I’ve forgotten to catalog them or tell anyone really about them. It’s become so ingrained in my day that when I start to talk about working on this or that, people raise their eyebrows at me because I’ve completely forgotten to mention it to anyone. But I assure you, Zack knows all of the ins and outs of my day as he witnesses it all first-hand. I may make him my personal assistant.
A few months ago, I think it was February, I lost my job at GameRevolution.com. I somewhat saw it coming with several of the changes going on there, but it still sucked nonetheless. At the same time, my boss offered me a lead writer position at ActionTrip.com, where I was spending most of my time writing news stories and occasionally reviewing games. Now I write news, write 1-2 features a month, and review as many games as I can.
However, no longer writing at GR meant no more writing about video game art books, books, and comics. AT likes my video game soundtrack reviews, but they weren’t too keen on the entire extended universe. Since I didn’t want to give up my contacts that I worked so hard to make, I approached a friend of mine from the Kombo days who I knew started work at The Daily Crate for LootCrate. I asked her if she would like my reviews of this sort, and not only has she liked them, she asked me to join her staff in full to write about whatever the hell I want in the name of all things geeky. Yeah, like I needed anyone to beg me to do that.
I really enjoy writing over at TDC. I have a lot of freedom, and my odd writing style fits in rather well. Plus I’m encouraged to write about LEGOs all the time, so of course I’m having a blast. Any game reviews that AT isn’t keen on go over to TDC as well. I also got the greenlight to write about friggin’ InkMaster and Tattoo Nightmares. I really have no complaints at all.
It’s a whole new world as a writer when you really enjoy what you write. It’s not that I don’t enjoy working on SEO, because I really do, and I’m ecstatic that I keep getting new clients with that business, but it’s nice to be appreciated and welcomed for writing about the silly things you like.
I’m still figuring out how to balance all of this and take care of Zack at the same time, but I’m getting there. When he goes to Mother’s Day Out next year, I won’t know how to fill all of that time.
